The Leica TL2 On Tour with Hurts

Hurts are an English synthpop duo formed in 2009, consisting of synthesist Adam Anderson and singer Theo Hutchcraft. Their two albums ‘Happiness’ and ‘Exile’ reached the Top 10 in the UK and they have recently released their new studio album ‘Desire’ so we caught up to find out more about life backstage.

You’re currently touring across Europe, tell us a bit more about the tour.

This tour is celebrating the release of the fourth record, ‘Desire’. We’re spending nearly 7 weeks on the road, travelling from Siberia to Switzerland, Moldova to Manchester… and everywhere in between.

Could you tell us a little about your route into photography and anyone who influenced you on the way?

My dad is a painter and photographer, so from a young age we were always encouraged to pick up a camera when inspiration called. Benefitting from the immediacy of a digital camera, we used to review my images straight away and he’d advise me with regard to framing and composition, then off I’d go, continuing to happily click away, training my eye and sharpening my focus.

Another key influence is Sebastiao Salgado. I went to see an exhibition of his years ago and was absolutely blown away. His images are so clear and pure and really struck me. They carry an enormous yet understated emotional weight and that exhibition and those photographs have stayed with me for a long time.

What photography genres are you interested in?

Like Sebastiao Salgado’s portraits, I love an emotive image.

I particularly like the use of black & white as and - I’m not sure if this is because I am colour blind - but I think it allows you to fill in the colour yourself.

What camera are you shooting with and how are you finding it?

I’m delighted to have taken a Leica TL2 with a 35mm lens on the road and am absolutely loving it. To me, it feels like an instrument. It does what you tell it to do. It’s crafted so beautifully that using it comes completely naturally. It translates what I want to see, without having to do too much

What projects are you working on next?

We have a second leg of this tour which takes us to Asia in the New Year. Other than that I’m very much looking forward to getting back in to my studio and working with lots of new talent.
